I’ve never gotten the whole “Oprah is God” thing and after seeing a clip from her show yesterday..it only added to my confusion. In the clip, Drew Barrymore, who was a guest of Oprah’s, discussed her $1 million dollar donation to, and her involvement with, the World Food Programme. Unfortunately, however, when Oprah turned the discussion toward the actress’s recent Vogue cover, Drew’s humanitarian efforts were overshadowed by some unbelievable statements made by both women.
On the show, both Oprah and Drew agreed that being on the cover of Vogue magazine somehow validates you as “a real woman”, especially, as Drew states, when you are so “utterly yourself”.
Besides the fact that it’s really quite bizarre that women who’ve enjoyed as much career success as these two have would actually need the validation of a fashion magazine, there are a couple of problems with what they said.
First off, if Oprah and Drew want to stroke each others egos in private (both women have graced the cover of Vogue)…that’s fine…but what purpose does it serve to do it in front of millions of women who will never get that kind of “validation”? Are they trying to make us feel bad? Or does the part of your brain that houses common sense automatically begin to melt when you become rich and famous? (The part of Drew’s brain that houses vocabulary also apparently took a hit as I’m pretty sure she said that she “embellishes” these types of moments in her life.??)

Secondly, it’s painfully clear that Drew’s Vogue cover shot was photoshopped by someone who is apparently addicted to photoshop, so when you talk about how genuine you are…you’d better make sure that there isn’t a huge photo behind you that you don’t resemble.
You’ve been cited ladies. In the future, please, think before you speak.

I actually saw this show yesterday and I thought for a minute they were joking…but then realized that they weren’t.

I actually did not recognize Drew when I saw this magazine. So… I dunno how she’s utterly herself if she doesn’t even look like herself.
