Style. Cool Broads have it…how can we get it?
For me, a strong sense of personal style has several components…keeping up with what’s current and fashionable, understanding which styles work best for your body type, and finding clothes that reflect your personality and are a joy for you to wear. (Easier said that done, right?)
Then just when you think you’ve gotten a handle on your personal style, you need to throw together an outfit in 3 and a half minutes (as well as figure out what to do with the kids) because your husband wants you to meet him downtown for a last-minute company happy hour and by the way, please look nice.
It’s been my experience that taking inventory of what’s in your closet once a quarter (or at the very beginning of each season) is an important part of maintaining your personal style. It will also make those times when you need to pull something together quickly a lot less stressful. Getting rid of things you haven’t worn in a while, making sure you have fresh-looking basics readily available (i.e. white t-shirts without yellowed pits), and trying on your clothes for fit and to see if new outfit combinations work are easy ways to ensure that you’re prepared when you need to be. When getting dressed is easy, your look will appear effortless.
Speaking of fresh-looking basics, I found this article from the beauty and style team at Real Simple Magazine, “The Essentials for a Well-Balanced Wardrobe”. It’s a good starting point whether you’re just beginning to develop your wardrobe or you’re keeping if fresh by updating it.
The article encourages you to stock your closet with items from these five “clothing groups”:
1) The Staples
2) The Basics
3) The Statement Pieces
4) The Evening Standards
5) The Showstoppers
By loading up on your basics, going easy on the patterns, and indulging in one showstopper for special events, you’ll always have something appropriate to wear - no matter the occasion. The article details what pieces you should own from each group and why. Click here to read more.
Okay…now I’m hungry.
Never miss a post!
