For those Cool Broads with kids, I found an interesting article on DivineCaroline.com called, “The Six Best Careers for Moms.”
The list, put together by Nancy Collamer, career coach and founder of jobsandmoms.com, includes careers you’d expect (i.e. teacher) but also some that you wouldn’t (i.e. lawyer). Highlighting careers that have some flexibility to be managed around a mom’s busy schedule, the article lists more jobs than you’d think as a few of the categories are somewhat broad (i.e. by-appointment jobs).
After reading the article, I found myself wishing that my high school counselor had given me this information when I was mapping out my future. But to be honest even if he had, I probably would’ve been offended, responded that I was a “modern” woman, and told him that if a man didn’t have to take his future parenting responsibilities into account when deciding which career path to follow…neither did I. Hmpff.
Fast Forward to now…I’m a mom, and not putting that precious MBA that I worked so hard for to much use. Would I have chosen a different career path had I known that staying home with my children (at least for a while) was going to be something that I really wanted to do? Maybe…maybe not. Luckily, it appears that there are enough options on the list to accommodate a wide range of skill sets so that most women could probably find something of interest (and relevant to their educational background). It may not be the traditional path, but it can be challenging and rewarding (or at least lucrative enough to pay for someone ELSE to fold your laundry).
If you don’t currently work outside of the home, but are interested in getting back into the workforce, check out the full article here.
When you’re done reading that article, click here for a related post about classes offered at top business schools designed to help women successfully reenter the workforce after a leave of absence.
I’d love to hear from those of you who are able to make your career work while raising a family. Please feel free to impart any words of wisdom you may have or refer any resources that you’ve found particularly helpful.
Gotta go fold the laundry.

I, too, find myself feeling guilty of not using any of my degrees - the search for anthropologists who have left the “force” is not a wide one in Istanbul, I guess.
I think the reason why we crave to do “something” is the fact that most of us want to feel validated for our skills not related to parenting.
May the force be with us!
ps.: a lightsaber fighter. yeah. I could do that!
