Cool Broads aren’t pussies

SCENE: Key West, Spring Break - Midnight

Two college seniors, looking for adventure, decide to stalk Jimmy Buffet. Based on some questionable information from a drunken local, one thought she knew where his house was located and wanted to check it out. The other was happy to go along for the ride.

They parked their car just down the street from where the musician supposedly lived, dimmed the lights, and killed the engine. When they were certain that they weren’t being watched, the girls got out of the car and crept down the street to the singer’s home. The more adventurous of the two girls pointed (in a super-secret-navy-seal sort of way) to the overstuffed trashcan sitting in front of the home’s rod iron gate. The girls slithered up to the metal container and carefully opened the lid.

Jackpot! Underneath some banana peels and coffee grinds was an empty Domino’s pizza box with the name ‘Buffet” written on the side…and directly under the name - a phone number. Since she was holding the trashcan lid, the adventurous girl motioned for the girl along for the ride to pull the box out of the can (because why in the world would you NOT want Jimmy Buffet’s home phone number).

Ew, said the girl along for the ride.

Don’t be such a pussy, said the adventurous girl.

The coolest people I know are the ones who are always up for an adventure. You know the type…they have a certain sparkle in their eyes and a propensity to see something unfamiliar as nothing more than unchartered territory. It’s not that they’re unafraid. It’s that they’ve figured out how to momentarily put their fear in check for the sake of adventure. Because really, life’s meant to be an adventure, and Cool Broads who step outside their comfort zone every now and then are usually glad they did.

This doesn’t mean that you must climb Mt. Everest. It can be as simple as saying yes when you get an invitation to play golf with a friend (even though you don’t know a putter from a driver), using a new recipe for that meat loaf you’ve cooked twenty thousand times the same way, or trying out a strategy that you read on your favorite blog to get your kid to eat his broccoli. It means being open to ideas or experiences other than your own. It means being able evolve.

Close-minded people are boring. Cool Broads are anything but. Besides, life’s too short not to take a risk every now and then. It’s fun, it keeps you young, and you might even learn something.

So no more I’m too scared to try that new weight-lifting class or I hate Indian food (even though you’ve never tried it)…take the leap. You may not end up cut like Madonna or an Indian food convert, but you might end up surprising yourself. Don’t miss out…and don’t be a pussy. Meow.

Many times I have had an opportunity to try something that I was afraid of… and I usually MAKE myself do it, because I know I’ll regret it if I don’t! For instance, the first time I ever flew, I went alone… to the Dominican Republic! Some opportunities are once in a lifetime, and you have no way of knowing that when they’re in front of you… you HAVE to grab them while you can!

It hurts me that I can’t come and play here anymore.

That was my resolution on my 40th birthday - no more sideline wishing for me. I make a concerted effort to be a do-er and not a wish-er! It has certainly made my life more interesting to say the least!!

I have four kids, every day is an adventure!

I love trying new things. In high school, I always befriended the foreign exchange students because I craved something different from the small town, small minded community that we moved to. And hubby is CONSTANTLY asking me to stop trying new recipes - stick to the tried and true, he says. I guess after 13 years of marriage he still hasn’t figured out that I suck at cooking and nothing is “tried and true” in my kitchen.

I love this story! I think its good to be an adventurer sometimes, if not all the time. One problem . . . I grew up with a worrywart of a mother, and now I’m always a fraid of embarassing myself, I hate sports and I’m . . . bigger. any help, here people?

    Great comments ladies!

@Lauren…I know how you feel, sometimes I let the fear of embarrassment keep me from doing things that I really want to do too. I’m no shrink, but it seems like the more you put yourself in those situations, with time, that fear will dissipate.

Figure out what you really want to do, and then come up with a plan as to how you’re going to get it done. Does it mean classes, lessons, joining a team? Acting lessons can be useful in teaching people how to “let go” of their inhibitions. Let me know how it turns out!
