Hobo chic?

I’m pretty sure I just took a step backward in my journey to becoming a Cool Broad: I was caught sleeping on a park bench. Let me explain.

Last week I had guests coming in for the weekend, so I’d been cleaning, doing laundry, and grocery shopping…all of the things leave me completely exhausted (even though I can kickbox with the likes of Billy Blanks…on second thought, maybe there IS something to the quit-the-gym-and-just-keep-your-damn-house-clean way of thought).

Anyway, I also had the carpets cleaned in the morning (no, my guests did not include the President of the United States or any foreign dignitaries…the carpet was just in really bad shape) but I’d also promised to watch a friend’s kid for a couple of hours while she volunteered at her older son’s elementary school.

Because the carpet in the playroom was still wet, I picked up the little boy and took him and my son to the park to play (which was completely empty…probably because it was 103 degrees outside).

Well, the boys were playing and I was catching up on some catalogue browsing when I started to get sleepy. Soooo sleepy.

It was breezy and warm and I really wanted to lie down and take a nap. Nobody was around, so I turned sideways and laid down on the bench, pushing my baseball cap forward to cover my eyes.

“Let me know if someone comes,” I yelled to my son.

“Why?” he said.

“Because I don’t want to look like a hobo.”

Lying down felt good…really good. It felt as if I hadn’t slowed down for a week and all of the sudden I was floating in the warm belly of mother earth. The occasional breeze muffled traffic as well as the shrieks coming from my son and his buddy on the swings.

Eventually, however, I heard a few extra voices penetrating my womb-like existence (and I’m pretty sure I’m not schizophrenic…not there’s anything wrong with that).

Crap, I thought and sat up quickly.

I must’ve startled the mom who was there with her kids because she jumped a little and said, “Oh, I thought you were a homeless man.”

Nice.

One step forward, two steps back. I’m gonna have to be extra cool this week to make up for this one.

In my books, nodding off to sleep in the park makes you pretty cool!

I’m a very early-morning person, so I’m sorta vulnerable in the afternoon. Plus, I have the ability to catch a catnap at the drop of a hat if I’m still and reasonably comfy. So any place with a waiting room is fair game!

    Thankfully, I don’t snore…

Haha. But there’s nothing wrong with being tired and falling asleep on a hot day in the sun.

I think there’s something wonderfully dreamy about falling asleep in the park. I can never fall asleep anywhere but my bed so I am envious!
